Requiem for Ashokan, The Story Told in Landscape

The Olive Free Library Association is very pleased to present the third iteration of Olivebridge artist and twelfth-generation Ulster county resident, Kate McGloughlin’s exhibition, Requiem for Ashokan, The Story Told in Landscape. The show will run from November 16, 2019 through January 4, 2020, with an opening reception on Saturday November 16, from 2 – 4 pm, followed by an artist’s talk and reading at 4 pm, at which McGloughlin will be joined by local authors, Gail Straub (The Ashokan Way: Landscape’s Path Into Consciousness, Homebound Publications), and Nina Shengold, (Reservoir Year, Syracuse Press).

McGloughlin’s exhibition, featuring prints, paintings, works on paper, historical maps, video, and both written and spoken word installations, depicts the emotional upheaval her maternal ancestors’ neighbors and homeland endured during the clearing of the Esopus Valley to make way for the creation of the Ashokan Reservoir. The work, rendered in black and white, describes the devastation, disruption and loss of community, told from the landscape’s point of view.

McGloughlin will also conduct a children’s program, “Help Me Tell the Story”, on Saturday, November 23 from 2 – 4 pm, which will include storytelling and a mural making project for local citizens, ages 6 and older.

On Saturday, November 30 from 2 – 4 pm, McGloughlin will moderate a panel called, “Vanishing Olive”, where she will be joined by April M. Beisaw, PhD, RPA, Associate Professor of Anthropology, Vassar College and Associate Editor, Historical Archaeology; LeAnne Avery, PhD, Associate Professor, Science Education, Co-Editor, Community Development; and Adam Bosch, Director of Public Affairs, Bureau of Water Supply, NYC Department of Environmental Protection. The panel will discuss, among other things, the DEP land acquisition program and its effect on the historical/ecological culture of the Town of Olive, and the need to protect both the watershed and certain historical sites in Olive.

All events are free and open to the public and will be held in the Olive Free Library’s Community Room, 4033 Route 28A, West Shokan.

COVID-19 PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES

Please be assured that we have taken precautions to ensure the safety of visitors and staff during these times. If you don’t feel comfortable coming to the opening of the show, please come see the exhibition any time when the Olive Free Library is open to the public.

Here are some of our precautionary measures:
-everybody has to wear a mask when coming into the Gallery space or any other area in the Library
-hand sanitizer will be available in the Community Gallery
-arrows on the floor will show everyone how to move around the room
-most of the furniture will be taken out before the opening leaving only a few chairs inside the room that may not be moved
-there will be no food at the opening, just some small water bottles and juice bottles; nothing that can be shared
-both outside doors to the community room will be open so people don’t have to all enter or leave from the main library entrance.
