Cragsmoor Artists in Olive

The Olive Free Library Association is very pleased to present the exhibition Cragsmoor Artists in Olive featuring works by artists that currently live and work in Cragsmoor, one of the earliest art colonies in North America. The show, originally scheduled for March 28 – May 16, will now run from November 21, 2020 through March 6, 2021, with an opening on Saturday, November 21, 2 – 4 pm.

Cragsmoor Artists in Olive is curated by Ed Mues who joined the Olive Free Library as a volunteer on its Exhibition Committee nearly three years ago realizing his long desire to be involved in art. Ed introduced his town of Denning artists in April 2018 to the Olive community but now is moving further west, to one of the earliest artist colonies in North America: Cragsmoor. Above Ellenville in the 1870s, high on the Shawangunk ridge, a handful of talented and creative people fell in love with the rugged escarpments, the constantly changing light and weather, the spectacular views of mountains and valleys, the waterfalls and wildlife. They stayed, and they established a colony. One that became world renowned.

Today, there is a strong population of dedicated Cragsmoor Colony artists carrying on the heritage they embraced. The show’s participating artists are: Cynthia Altoriso, Tom Bolger, Charles Broderson, Melissa Chaney, DUTCH PINK, Letizia Gentile, Elinore Hollinshead, Gian Kamal, Patricia Peters, Mary Socolof, and Natalie Stopka.
